Sunrise, above the clouds
Start the day at altitude and watch Madeira wake up above the clouds. A short, spectacular half-day that has you back in Funchal before most hotels finish breakfast.
The island's best hour, before anyone else is up
There’s a version of Madeira only a handful of people see each morning: the one above the clouds, lit gold, an hour before the island wakes up. Pico Sunrise is the half-day that gets you there — up in the dark, at altitude for first light, and back in Funchal before breakfast.
Small group, island-born guide, and the kind of morning you’ll still be talking about at dinner.
First light above the clouds
The reason to set the alarm: watching the sun come up over a sea of cloud, with the island's peaks poking through. On a clear morning there's nothing like it.
Back before breakfast
A tight, well-run half-day. You're up in the dark and back in Funchal by mid-morning, with the rest of the day still ahead of you.
Exact peak & route to confirm
[TBD — confirm with Jeff which peak Pico Sunrise climbs to and the pick-up time, so we can name it precisely on the page.]
Sunrise is a weather gamble — we play the odds for you
A clear sunrise is never guaranteed, but your guide watches the forecast and the cloud base closely and picks the morning and the spot that give you the best possible shot at it.
The dream morning — we head straight up for the full above-the-clouds sunrise.
Sometimes the cloud is exactly what makes the shot. Your guide reads the layer and positions for it.
If conditions really won't play, your guide will talk you through the options honestly before you commit.

Questions we get asked
How is this different from the Secret Sunrise?
Pico Sunrise is our peak sunrise — you know you're heading up high for the classic above-the-clouds moment. The Secret Sunrise is a different product: a spot we never publish, revealed only to the people in the jeep. Two different experiences, both at dawn.
What time is pick-up?
[TBD — confirm the pre-dawn pick-up time with Jeff; it shifts through the year with the sunrise.] It's early: the whole point is being at altitude before first light.
How cold will it be?
Cold — you're at altitude before sunrise, so it's much colder than the coast and often windy. A proper warm layer makes all the difference.
What if it's cloudy?
A clear sunrise can't be promised anywhere. Your guide reads the conditions and picks the best window and spot, and low cloud often makes for the most dramatic photos rather than ruining them.
