The wild side of the island
Waterfalls, black-sand coast, and a thousand-year forest. A full day west, from the Atlantic to the high plateau, with a guide who reads the weather so you don't have to.
Greener, wilder, and a lot fewer people
The west of Madeira is the island most visitors never reach. It’s the side of waterfalls running straight off the road, misty laurel forest older than most countries, and a coastline of black volcanic sand. Your guide handles the route, the timing, and the weather. You just look out the window and get out when it’s worth it.
If you’ve already ticked off the postcard spots, or you just want the version of Madeira that feels remote and raw, this is the one.
Sea level to the plateau
Six stops that carry the day
Ponta do Sol
The old port, founded around 1425. Coffee by the water before the climb starts, and the island's leading banana country all around you.
Paul da Serra
Madeira's only high plateau, born in the island's third eruption phase. On a clear day the volcanic valleys open up beneath you.
Fanal Forest
The densest stand of thousand-year laurel trees on the island, usually wrapped in fog. Half forest, half fairy tale.
Porto Moniz
Natural lava pools carved into the volcanic shoreline. Bring swimwear if the sea's calm and you fancy a dip.
Seixal & Waterfalls
Black-sand beach and roads with waterfalls falling straight past the windscreen. The north coast at its most dramatic.
The Tracks Between
Old agricultural roads and dirt paths a normal car can't reach. This is where the Land Rover earns its keep.
You can't pick a bad day here
Madeira's weather changes hour by hour, and the west changes fastest of all. That's not a problem, it's the whole reason the tour works. Your guide reads conditions every morning and moves the route to match.
We prioritise the forest and valley routes, where the water is at its most spectacular.
We swing to the open viewpoints and shoreline stops for the big Atlantic panoramas.
We cross to a clearer microclimate. On an island this vertical, sun is usually 20 minutes away.

Questions we get asked
How is this different from the East Tour?
The West is about waterfalls, old forest, and rugged volcanic coast. The East is about mountain peaks and coastal ridgelines. They complement each other rather than overlap, plenty of guests book both.
Do you pick up in Funchal?
Yes. Hotel and holiday-rental pick-ups and drop-offs across the Funchal area are included, free of charge. We don't pick up outside Funchal or at the cruise port.
Is it suitable for all ages?
This is a group tour built for adults and older children, 10 and up. Travelling with younger kids? A Private Tour gives you the flexibility to make the day work for them.
What should I wear?
Comfortable shoes and layers. You'll go from warm coast to a cool, often misty plateau in the same day, so a light jacket earns its place in the bag.
Can we swim at the lava pools?
When the sea is calm at Porto Moniz, yes. Pack swimwear and a towel just in case, your guide will call it based on the conditions on the day.
